Well, there are a couple things that concern me.

First, what’s the goals of the law and is it designed to achieve these goals. From the bill, “The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.” To enforce any law through the philosophy of deterrence is a fundamental problem because it ignores the original motivation (in this case probably rooted in the Mexican economy). I’ve see this philosophy at work all over the U.S. and it a lot of effort for a little pay off (this is a whole discussion in itself). So, the initial design, independent of anything else, I think will be ineffective and overly expensive (should a a tax concern here).

Second, deals with the concern over jobs. This is a classic issue (and a legitimate one) that bubbles up every once in a while. If you looked at the processes of legalizing a bunch of the drugs we have illegal today (pot, opium, cocaine, at one point alcohol), you’d find at the heart a political battle over a group of more ‘natural’ citizens, and a group of minorities (usually immigrants, though not necessarily). Criminalizing the drug becomes a way of scapegoating things like poor economic policies that lead to a recession or loss of wages, or poor benefits, etc.). It’s hard not to see this bill as falling nicely in this history of law making and conflict since the conditions today are ripe for similar legal practices.

Third, has to do with who the bill is designed to address which I think we’d all agree are mexican illegal immigrants or undocumented workers, or whatever term you prefer. As opposed to say, eastern Europeans, who also constitute a large, though not nearly as visible illegal immigration group (look at your local strip club for this example), or people from Southeast Asia (e.g., vietnam, laos, etc.). And since we can’t notice whether someone is in the country legally or not upon simply seeing them, how one looks then invites suspicion and from a law enforcement perspective, a shift from innocent until proven guilty to guilty until proven innocent. (this happens all the time to young black men in the city).

Fourth, and to go along with the need to prove one’s innocence over guilt, involved the related issue of legal discourse. Here, loosely defined words like ‘reasonable suspicion’ are used to essentially justify almost any stop and search. In theory we’d likely say that that’d represent a violation of once civil liberties and perhaps due process, but those things only become significant issues if one has the power to fight against a municipality, county, or state, which is rare and not to be expected among a minority population.

I think we also have to really listen to the mostly brown people who are most fearful of this bill. There might be something to their concerns. You have to be a little cautious here because lots of times we’re dealing with a socially constructed ideology that doesn’t gel with the reality of the situation, but in this case we’re talking about people who already know what it’s like to have darker skin and live in Arizona. That knowledge isn’t based off of television depictions and all that, but a real, material reality and so I think needs to be considered as well.

Remember the Noam Chomsky link I put up a while ago comparing the social, economic, political climate of today with that of the years before the rise of Nazism. He had some important points in justifying people’s anger. Jobs are tough to get, real wages have not kept up with inflation, benefits are hard to get and more expensive, our political system has been purchased by dominant economic powers. This reality will be experienced and have consequences. Chomsky, and myself, are concerned with the way this reality manifests itself. Is it more an example of scapegoating to a group seen as different and therefore threatening, or is it focused on the real policies and practices that deep-down, create the frustration in the first place.

At the end of the day I think you have a law with problems related to effectiveness, practicality, and discrimination, and really won’t be all that effective at addressing the concern over jobs, crime or whatever. It’s reactionary nature; in code is really designed to address mexican immigration and will place law enforcement in a tough position to enforce this law while likely ignoring or downplaying other criminal violations; it’s loosely worded which will allow for its easy exploitation (something already inherent in the differential power relationship between law enforcement and citizen/everyday person) and added difficulty in resisting or protecting one’s rights; that will end up costing the tax payers lots of money in the court proceedings and other (often disguised and absent the conversation) legal services (jail, deportation, immigration detention centers, etc.); and looks a little to similar to other laws that when we look back on now were pretty clearly designed to control one segment of the population that was construed as a scapegoat for a host of social issues with causes located elsewhere.

We mourn because a little girl is dead for no reason. We mourn because a little girl is dead for terrible reasons. We mourn for Aiyana Jones, because she is yet another victim of police violence, and because as a community, we want to stand in solidarity with her community and her family – and all those who suffer at the hands of the prison-industrial complex in America.

Aiyana was murdered by the police on May 16, 2010, in Detroit, MI during a no-knock raid on her family’s home. Police threw a flash grenade into the first-floor window, where the little girl lay asleep. After police barged into the home, an alleged confrontation took place between Officer Joseph Weekley and Aiyana’s grandmother, during which it is claimed that Weekley’s gun “accidentally” went off, killing the girl. There is video documentation of what transpired, but there are many conflicting accounts at this time – and more information will undoubtedly be revealed in the near future. The lawyer for Aiyana’s family states that the video taken contradicts the police account of what happened. He states, “What I’m most concerned about is that this videotape demonstrates that police are involved in a cover-up of a child’s killing.” (CBS News) Charles Jones, Aiyana’s father, told reporters that upon rushing into the room where Aiyana was shot, the police forced him to get down on the ground – and he had to put his face in his daughter’s blood.

We do not mourn Aiyana’s death because she was so young and so innocent, though this terrible reality weighs heavy on our hearts. We mourn Aiyana as we mourned Oscar Grant, as we mourned countless individuals whose lives have been ended or forever changed by systemic police violence and the profit-driven prison-industrial complex. So while we do mourn this little girl’s murder, we also acknowledge its connection to the larger whole, which encompasses a racist system of perverted “justice” and social control.

In a sick way, Aiyana’s death represents the intersection of police violence and media spectacle – the raid on her family’s home was filmed as part of a reality television show called “The First 48.” The raid that night was being filmed for media consumption, for entertainment purposes. How disturbing and poignant that the video this film crew recorded of the incident reveals the true brutality of police violence, when its original intent was surely to “document” a dramatized story about police heroics, a story constructed for the American audience to bolster societal beliefs about the role of the police.

Though it is clear that in the coming days and weeks, more terrible facts will most likely be coming to light regarding the circumstances surrounding Aiyana’s murder, what is clear at this point is that the police are not giving an honest account of the incident. This should not be surprising. Acts of police violence are often covered up or depicted as tragic, yet solitary, incidents. By no means should we participate in perpetuating this lie. What happened that night to Aiyana and her family was business as usual when it comes to policing. It happened in Detroit, Michigan, last week – but in 2009 it happened in Oakland, California, and it happens in cities around the country – and the world – all the time.

Officer Weekley is on paid administrative leave at this time, as was Officer Tony Pirone of the BART Police following the murder of Oscar Grant.

Members of the Oakland community will gather at 11 am this Sunday, May 23rd, at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland in a silent vigil to mourn a young life lost, a family shattered, and another victim of systemic police violence.

Chief Betsy J.S. Hard

Bloomfield Police Department

785 Park Avenue

Bloomfield, CT 06002

Dear Chief Hard,

I believe that I was racially profiled by one of your officers on March 31st. I am challenging you to engage in a public dialogue about racial profiling in particular and police misconduct in general. I was given a flimsy justification for the traffic stop, and when I received my ticket the stated reason for pulling me over was not listed. While I’m not expecting a response, I want you and your department to know that the public is now aware of this incident. As a black male I am all too familiar with the practice of racial profiling by law enforcement. However, I refuse to accept this form of discrimination.

Department of Justice statistics show that the police are three to four times as likely to use force against people of color and search them during traffic stops. Of course, there is also an extensive history of unarmed black males who have been shot and killed by law enforcement officers. Individuals who are familiar with the complaint process have told me that there is next to zero chance of your officer being held accountable, so I have chosen to address this case in the court of public opinion. People of color should not have to feel threatened by an entity which purports to “serve and protect”.

Sincerely,

David Samuels

Breaking news, I know. My encounter with the cops was minor compared to the fate suffered by Jashon Bryant, Sean Bell, Oscar Grant and countless other brothers whose names we’ll never know, but I was immediately reminded of the brazen act of profiling documented on this site by Lauren Lo Bue, a white woman who was stopped while riding through West Hartford with her black boyfriend by the town police, then subjected along with her significant other to a lengthy interrogation despite having not committed any type of traffic violation. Fortunately like Lauren, I have a platform to shed light on police misconduct. Ok, here’s the deal… While traveling on Cottage Grove Road, a two lane street, I passed a Bloomfield Police cruiser on my left as I was in the process of making a right turn onto a side street. The cruiser immediately turned from the center lane (isn’t that a traffic violation?) and pulled me over. It took me three tries to get the officer to explain why he stopped me.

“You passed me on the right,” said the officer. I demanded to know how I was supposed to make a right hand turn without passing him – should I have stopped in the middle of moving traffic until Officer Friendly drove through the intersection? His response was, “Your marker plates aren’t displayed.” Both my front and rear plates are clearly displayed on my back window and front dashboard – this is a common practice to deter theft of the plates. I have driven both of my vehicles with the plates displayed in this manner for over a decade and the cops haven’t blinked. When I received my ticket, the stated reason that the officer provided for stopping me was not listed. Of course, I will be filing a complaint with the Bloomfield Police ( I won’t hold my breath waiting for justice), but this minor case of harassment has got me thinking about the far more serious abuses of power perpetrated against people of color by law enforcement every day. Blacks are four times as likely to be subjected to the use of force by the cops, Latinos three times. People of color are also much more likely to be searched. Should I just be grateful that I wasn’t added to those grim statistics today? I don’t think so.

An internal police memo that was obtained by the Hartford Courant describes the gang activity in the city as an “infestation”, citing a total of 138 crews and 4,000 members, 800 of whom are under the age of 17. A large portion of the gangs are said to be affiliated with cliques such as the Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings & Los Solidos, all national organizations. After parents, city officials & educators expressed their concern, the cops said, “Oh, that number isn’t really accurate – groups that don’t meet the Department of Justice definition of gangs were included in the totals”. The tone deaf city school Superintendent Steven Adamowski’s reaction was “Gangs? What Gangs? We don’t have gangs in our schools!” It was amusing yet sad to watch Adamowski change course after parents confirmed during an October 21 community meeting that yes, gangs are a fact of life in Hartford schools. Former Weaver High principal Paul Stringer weighed in, stating that Adamowski was well aware of the presence of gangs in city schools.

So now what? Hartford was recently awarded a $ 500,000 federal grant which is supposed to be used to mentor city youths and steer them away from gangs, including a $100 reward for those who complete the program successfully. The question that I have for city officials is when will there be a frank discussion about the root causes of the condition of black and Latino males in Hartford? A report by the Center for Social Inclusion, “One Region: Promoting Prosperity Across Race”, finds that urban communities are disproportionately deprived of infrastructure spending, job creation and vital government services. The authors of the report believe that the hood should get a taste of the federal stimulus money which is being doled out in billions. While the black unemployment rate nationally is over 12.6 %, with considerably higher numbers for young black males, the report estimates that in some pockets of the urban community the figure is as high as 50%. Another report by United for a Fair Economy, “State of the Dream 2009: The Silent Depression”, finds that people of color in this country are already mired in a silent economic depression, which has been fueled to a significant degree by the foreclosure crisis.

David Simon, a former reporter for the Baltimore Sun and producer of the classic HBO series The Wire told Bill Moyers of PBS something that needed to be said, which is that the drug trade is the only viable economic resource in poverty stricken urban communities. A 15 year old kid whose parents are strung out on drugs doesn’t want to hear any I Have a Dream speeches. He or she wants to know where their next meal is coming from and how they can get some rent money because Mom or Dad smoked it up and the landlord is looking to throw the entire family out on the street. It gets worse – an institutionally racist criminal justice system has turned Connecticut into a criminal factory. 50% of the male prison population in this state comes from Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport. Blacks and Latinos more than double the number of incarcerated whites. Finding work in this country is hard enough if you’re not a white male – a Pew study finds that a black male with no criminal record has the same chance of being hired for a job as a white male with a felony conviction. You can do the math regarding the chances of a black man with a criminal history finding gainful employment in the United States.

All of the aforementioned facts are recruiting tools for street gangs. These kids aren’t stupid – they see criminal activity as the only avenue to make some real dough in a racist societal structure. As long as economic and criminal justice inequities exist, gangs will remain an attractive option for black and Latino youths who learn all too soon that the game is rigged against them.

A group of more than 50 students originally met last month after hearing that former Kenyan student Charles Ngetich had been forced to drink blood by his cross country coach, believing he had no other choice. After leaving the team and having his track scholarship removed, Ngetich faces the threat of deportation.

This incident, coupled with the events of the past several years (including a racial attack of a Latino student on campus; the firing of socialist Opinion Editor Marissa Blaszko by the CCSU Recorder; the discovery that black faculty members make less money than their white colleagues; racist and sexist remarks made by The Recorder; etc) has lead representatives of the student body to call this rally, as well as a future educational event scheduled for later in the semester.

The list of students who have called for the rally include officers and members of the CCSU NAACP, Africana Student Organization, Black Student Union, Youth for Socialist Action, Pride, the Ruthe Boyea Women’s Center, the African Studies Department, United Caribbean Club, Latin American Student Organization, Off-Center Magazine, Phi Sigma Sigma, Muslim Student Association, Progressive Student Alliance, Central Artist Collective, Man Enough Initiative, and others.

Speakers will include Ronnie Davis, President of the New Britain NAACP; student Gigi Neama, President of the Africana Student Organization; student Marissa Blaszko, President of the Youth for Socialist Action; as well as other students and faculty who have yet to be confirmed.

“This Wednesday, CCSU students will rally to demand an end to racism on our campus. We stand in solidarity with all students who have been the victims of harassment, discrimination, and even torture on our campus, as well as internationally,” the group’s FaceBook page reads. “Stop by and show your support–an injury to one is an injury to all!”

For more information, contact Marissa Blaszko from the Youth for Socialist Action at blaszkomaa@ccsu.edu or 860-218-0566, or Gigi Neama of the Africana Student Organization at neamageo@ccsu.edu or 860-803-3501.

Forget about Al-Qaeda – you need to worry about Al Smith. Right-wing extremists have reemerged as the most serious threat to this country, however federal law enforcement officials have not placed as much emphasis on addressing their activities as those of Osama Bin Laden’s terrorist network. This may have something to do with the fact that right-wingers occupy positions of power within the United States government (wild guess).

On April 20, 1995 U.S. Army veteran Timothy McVeigh drove a truck loaded with explosives to the front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He ran from the vehicle after igniting two fuses. The horrific explosion that followed killed 168 people, including 19 children in a daycare center located inside the building, and injured 450. McVeigh was executed on June 11, 2001 while his co-conspirator Terry Nichols was sentenced to life in prison. McVeigh espoused anti-government rhetoric, railing against taxes, gun control and “big government” (sound familiar?). After his heinous crime, no Patriot Act style legislation was introduced, white males weren’t picked up off the street and indefinitely detained, and warrantless wiretapping remained an abstract concept that one would associate with George Orwell’s 1984 novel.

Fast forward to 2009 and the ideology that inspired McVeigh to level a building filled with innocent people and children has infected the discourse of mainstream politics. Nationwide Tea Parties, which have been organized by corporate lobbyists and conservative think tanks supposedly to protest President Obama’s tax and health care plans, have turned out to be orgies of racism directed at Obama, people of color and immigrants. The Tea Parties have been followed by a series of violent acts and racist behavior, perpetrated by wing-nuts.

On May 31 Dr. George Tiller, who was the medical director of a Wichita, Kansas clinic which provided late term abortions, was murdered by anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder at the church in Wichita where Tiller served as an usher. Roeder has been charged with first degree murder. Less than two weeks later on June 11, white supremacist and Holocaust denier James Von Brunn entered the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and shot security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, wounding him fatally before two other guards returned fire, injuring Von Brunn. He was indicted July 29 on seven counts including first degree murder – four of the counts make him eligible for the death penalty.

Pastor ( yeah, right) Steven Anderson of the Faithful World Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is publicly praying for the death of the president. On August 19 twelve people with guns, including a member of Anderson’s church, attended Obama’s speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention in Phoenix. A former Secret Service agent who appeared on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show said that these individuals “…are creating an atmosphere that could be dangerous to the president.”

Finally, Republican South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson yelled out “you lie” at Obama as he addressed a joint session of Congress on September 9. Wilson’s idol is the late segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond. Wilson has publicly disparaged Thurmond’s biracial daughter and led opposition to the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the state house in 2000. He has raised $ one million since his outburst and become a hero among the tea-baggers who took the “you lie” slogan and ran with it. During a Tea Party protest in Washington D.C. last weekend, the crowd repeatedly called the president a liar.

On Tuesday, former president Jimmy Carter told NBC’s Brian Williams that he believes racism is at the root of much of the animosity right-wingers are expressing toward Obama. What is equally disturbing as this proliferation of right-wing extremism is the reaction of the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress, which has been to appease these racists by watering down what was already a lukewarm at best health care reform bill. Carter has eloquently pointed out that the wack jobs who are toting “Bury Obama with Kennedy” signs at Tea Party protests are angry about something besides the possibility of a public option being included in the new health care policy. The climate of hate in America right now is off the hook even for this country, which is saying a lot. It’s time to address the terror threat from within.

(East Haven) Due to numerous complaints of harassment against people of color by the East Haven Police Department, over 130 Connecticut residents gathered together Saturday afternoon on Main Street to demand justice and an end to racial profiling and border patrols*. Organized by members of Unidad Latina en Accion, participants marched peacefully in 90 degree heat, one mile down Main Street to the center of town. Along the way, black, brown & white marchers from across CT united together and chanted, “no justice, no peace” and “hey hey, ho-ho, these racist cops have got to go” to the beat of make-shift drums. As the march approached the center of town, the group was met by several members of the Massachusetts based white supremacist group, New England White Pride. The police barely provided a buffer between the two groups and tensions were rising. A shouting match ensued and soon escalated into a fight between one of the marchers, and a white supremacist from New Haven. Both parties were arrested by police after the brief scuffle, and the march continued to the town green where several speakers spoke about the need to stand together against injustice wherever it shows.

In addition to the neo-nazis, 40 or so town residents also organized a counter-protest across the street from the town green in support of the East Haven police. Some of the residents tried to distance themselves from the racists by telling reporters that “this isn’t about racism”, but at the same time were screaming “go back to where you came from” at the marchers. And one visibly angered counter-protester even told a women carrying a Puerto Rican flag to “shove it where the sun don’t shine”. Several marchers still angered by the presence of the white supremacists, continued to shout back and forth to the chagrin of the “peace marshals” charged with keeping things from getting confrontational. Around 2pm, the protesters walked back past the white supremacists without incident, the one mile to hear a final speech by Emma Jones, the mother of Malik Jones who was needlessly gunned down by East Haven police in 1997 and has been fighting for racial justice ever since. Emma thanked the marchers for keeping the memory of her son alive by continuing to speak out against police violence. She also spoke about how “all oppressions are linked” and told the crowd that “we have to make a firm commitment, that we are united” in the face of those that would try to divide us. And finally, after raising about $450, several friends and family of the marcher that was arrested earlier, headed to the police station in a show of jail solidarity.

*Several residents have expressed concern that when crossing over the border between New Haven and East Haven, they are stopped by police. Because while New Haven police are not allowed to inquire about immigration status, East Haven police do not have that restriction.
