About Us
First, a little about us. The Hartford Independent Media Collective (HIMC) is a diverse group of individuals, volunteering our time, united by the simple desire to provide the people of greater Hartford with alternative perspectives not covered by the mass media. With corporate scandal, government corruption, war on terrorism, threats to civil liberties, and the sinking economy, the need for independent media has never been greater. Openness to working in a non-hierarchical environment

Curiosity and creativity
Ability to meet with the collective about once a month
Willingness to communicate and be transparent
Enthusiasm to learn

How to get involved
Email us at info@hartfordimc.org. We can answer any questions you may have and let you know when our next meeting is.

Who are we looking for? Here are some descriptions of roles you could fill with HIMC (in no particular order):

Feet on the Street
Go to rallies, community meetings, strikes, City Council meetings, etc. to interview people involved and/or record what’s going on (whether with pen and paper, video camera or audio). Activism is often underreported in the local news. Help spread the word about what’s going on by reporting on it.

High School Correspondents
Don’t let the media tell you about yourself – be the media, and let people in the larger community know what’s going on in your school. If you write for a school newspaper consider sharing some articles that people in Greater Hartford might find interesting.

University Correspondents
What’s happening on campus? Whether you are a college student or you work at one, keep the community up-to-date on important stuff going on at college campuses.

Arts Correspondents
Write about concerts, art exhibits, plays, craft fairs, whatever. (We can hook you up with a press pass so you will be able to get into stuff for free.)

State Correspondents
Are you interested in what’s going on at the state capitol and how it affects everyday people? Keep us informed about statewide news.

Opinion Writers
Got an opinion? Why not write about it? And if you have your own blog, consider cross posting on our website.

Photographers
Tell the story in pictures.

Videographers
When we’re out and about, sometimes we want to shoot video for our blog, take notes for an article and record audio for RadioActive (our radio show) all at the same time. If you like to shoot video, whether you have a camera or not, you could help us out!

Audio Engineers (professional or amateur)
Hartford IMC produces a local radio show, RadioActive, that airs weekly on WWUH, WHUS, and WESU, in addition to occasional web podcasts. We’re always looking for help and ideas so that our show can be the best it can be.

Etc. etc. etc.
We are also seeking food writers, travel writers, fiction writers, poets, sticker makers, artists, flyer makers, musicians, people with fundraising or organizational skills, whatever!
