Thanks for this article. Over at A Few Queers On The Prowl we posted, “Torture and slow death by the refusal to give proper medical treatment to political and class war prisoners by state and federal correctional authorties must stop!”

“We demand full and comprehensive medical for Avelino and all prisoners.”

The article in the Courant made my blood boil and my heart went out to Avelino. The bastards that would deny medical treatment to those in jail should be in the court.

Could be. The reason I wrote this is because of what I read in the papers last week: for more than a year, the prison authorities would not allow Avelino Gonzalez-Claudio proper medical treatment. Then, a month before he returned to a Hartford court on February 5th, he got the neurological test he needed. Under a plea deal, he will face seven years in prison and a $10,000 fine for his role in the 1983 Wells Fargo robbery.

I also have a distinct memory of an early-morning call sometime around 1983 to come to the Federal Building where there was a protest against the government’s repressive response (maybe they were bringing in a suspect).

There were military types heavily armed, in black, on the roofs of the surrounding buildings. It was the first time I had seen that in Hartford. Leaves an impression.

Amy Goodman did a segment on Democracy Now today about Hartford’s General Assistance program, which has the shortest term in the country due to Clinton era reforms (thanks Democrats). Sad stories of desperation, taking place right here. The undeniable fact is that Hartford has the highest poverty rate in the nation and no attempts to spin the numbers will change that.

Excellent points, Meghan and Dave. Just in case folks haven’t already heard, there is an incredibly compassionate Republican proposal floating around in D.C. which calls for the elimination of Medicare. I’m recording the state public hearing – I’ll include a report in a piece that I’m working on for next week.
