OpenOffice.org - an office suite akin to Microsoft Office, includes word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation (like Powerpoint), a math component, and a vector drawing program. Compatible with .DOC files and many other word processing programs. You can save files in a large array of formats and easily create PDFs right from the word processor. Versions available for Mac and PC, in multiple languages.
Mozilla.org - a clearinghouse of great free software, for Mac and PC. Firefox is a powerful, pop-up blocking web browser, the originator of tabbed browsing - no excess windows. Thunderbird is a pop mail client. New programs under development all the time. A must have for those who are sick of Internet Explorer.
AVG Free Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware - Free downloads to protect your computer from unwanted visitors. The site includes a “Top Threats” ticker to warn of recent viruses. The site, run by GRISOFT, gives periodic updates when new threats are detected.
7-Zip File Archive - a free alternative to WinZip. Allows you to compress files for website or email attachments. High compression ratio and multiple languages. Can be use for individual or company use. Donations are encouraged.
Freebyte.com - a resource filled web guide to all things freeware. Contains an extensive listing of web tools, online reference sources, zip/unzip, programming, music, games, free online TV channels, anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, and a great section on free operating systems! Even has informative links for conventional operating systems.
Internet Junkbuster - banner ad blocker, designed also to protect your computer’s personal settings from cookies and other threats to privacy. This site also recommends Guidescope which is said to be a bit more user-friendly for computer novices.
FontFreak - freeware and shareware fonts to download for both Mac and PC. There is a section of the site that offers fonts you can buy, but there are hundreds of free ones available.
GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program - a photo and graphics editing program. Free open source way to modify your digital photos, logos, web content, etc. Online manuals and updates on the website.
