Many of us should be getting our rebate checks in the mail soon. President Bush claims that by putting more money into the public’s hands we will be more likely to spend it and, in so doing, prevent the economy from continuing down its slow and steady spiral towards a recession. (more…)

NEW YORK As the scandal of suicide attempts
by Iraq veterans expands — in the face of Veterans Administration
denials — another horrific case has emerged, once again only gaining
attention because of a local newspaper. E&P has been tracking these
accounts for almost five years and only recently has the problem, with
an estimated 1,000 attempts a month now reported, gained wide media,
and official, attention.
The latest story came Saturday in a story by Patrick McCreless in The Cullman Times of Cullman, Ala.
The headline is similar to so many others lately: “Family pushing for changes after soldier’s suicide.”
It tells how one Dorothy Screws “witnessed her only
son, U.S. Army Pvt. Tommie Edward Jones, commit suicide right before
her eyes six weeks ago in Colorado. She says the Army, which promised
to be there for Screws and her family to deal with the loss, has yet to
provide assistance. (more…)

Our legal system wasn’t designed to keep the prisons full to capacity, but it accomplishes this with amazing consistency. Today, one out of every 100 people in America is in a penal institution. If we build them, they will come. (more…)

Feb 19, 2008 Hartford Public High School I see it on the faces of everyone I meet. The Shock and Awe as we are all subjected to the constant bombardment by corporate con men. The experts and economic hit men are brought in to flood our eyesight with the facts and figures of failure. We are constantly assailed with statistics that show our children are failing, teachers are faulted for their inability to raise test scores, unions are hammered for resisting the gutting of contractual rights, parents are vilified for not being able to control the behavior of their children. We are stunned by the constant drumming of fear. Fear of terrorism, fear of disease, fear of economic recession, fear of unintended consequences. All of this is used purposefully by the change agents, the vision masters who have a program that will correct all of our concerns if we just simply surrender. If we give over our constitutional rights to participate and be willing sheep led to the slaughter house, all will be well. It is time to put our feet down and resist. (more…)

This Saturday the 9th at 4:30 there will be meeting to discuss the formation of a new coop in Hartford at the Alchemy Juice Bar on New Britain Ave. The Growing Green Coop will be unlike any other as it attempts to roll a whole lot of sustainability under one tent. Not only will there be a food buying club, but the coop also plans to pursue bulk biofuel purchases, group health care, and a shared space that will house child care and afterschool programs, yoga classes, gardening and a summertime farmers’ market. It’s an ambitious project that will require many hands. Please come to find out more and share your ideas about ways to better work and live together in the Hartford area.

The last time I had been inside the building was in 1992, with a fourth-grade boyfriend to see Something On Ice (everything is more worthwhile when it is On Ice, apparently).
The Whalers banners still hang here, I am sitting right under them. Me and my coworker drove from work, up from New Haven. I am not sure what to expect, I am excited. (more…)

A lot can happen over the course of five years.
Since the Hartford Independent Media Center started in 2002, we’ve seen volunteers relocate for their jobs and school, while others have started families. We think that our 5-year mark is as good of a time as any to remind the community that the Hartford IMC–a not-for-profit media activism organization–welcomes new volunteers. (more…)
