Julia and I enjoyed a night in downtown Hartford last night. We saw a great show, knocked a few back at The Russell, and then headed over to Aladdin for some much needed grub. Anywho, at Aladdin the pizza was cold, the falafel was soggy, and the homobigotry was flowing. (more…)

I’m guessing the acronym was chosen because it rhymes with vag.
The Feminism, Autonomy, Diversity, and Gender Expression Fest is this Saturday, starting at 11:30 am, at the Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Ave). All proceeds from the $10 admission fee goes toward My Sisters Place and Interval House. If you like to roll in late, admission is reduced to $6, or to $5 if you also bring a canned good donation.
They promise that this will be a “female positive day of music, workshops, and art.” There will be a clothing swap, arts & crafts bazaar, self-defense workshop, street harassment and response workshop, and music by Eula, Seeds, Panda and Child, Brazen Hussy (love the name!), Offsides, and The Vagitarians. Food Not Bombs will be preparing dinner.
They encourage males to attend too; there will be a workshop on “feminism for boys.”

January 28th is the submission deadline for the next issue of the print Hartford Undercurrent.
The Hartford Independent Media Center seeks submissions on the topic of sex–however you interpret it. Have you interviewed sex workers on Wethersfield Avenue? Reviewed the gay nightlife in Hartford? Gotten into a discussion with the steady activists who pray outside of the Hartford GYN Center on the corner of Jefferson and Main? Articles should relate to Hartford if possible, and represent your own original work.
Send submissions of 1000 words or less to himc@riseup.net and write “journal submission” in the subject line. Please include a short bio with submission, including your name as you would like to see it in print. We regret that due to space limitations we can’t publish every item received.

I am livid. Any report of such violence is infuriating, but here, it so happens that such actions have occurred at my workplace. Over what is known as Spring Fling weekend–an inane excuse for people to drink mass quantities of alcohol and behave irresponsibly–several University of Hartford students were victimized.
According to the police blotter published in The Informer, the University’s newspaper, there were two (reported) sexual assaults, two incidences of assault, two of harassment, and about a dozen other criminal actions. Only one of these crimes was reported in an off-campus newspaper, no doubt an action that pleases those who value image over safety. (more…)

I take comfort in that there is one last unassailable democratic place on earth, even if it is not so much a place as a message board. It’s a place where the straight-laced myth of sleepy Connecticut is busted wide open, where perversity prevails, and you always take a deep breath before throwing yourself into the mix. This place? Craigslist.

On Friday March 2nd, Wrench in the Works Collective had their Grand Opening. The collective has space on Main Street in Willimantic. They will be hosting open mics and performances by activist musicians, a “fairly free market,” and Latino film nights. They are seeking to build their library, so if anyone has zines, books, or other media items to donate, see their wishlist and get into contact.

Apparently blackface is the new black. But unlike iPods and YouTube, I just can’t get behind this trend. However, if you loved “Bullets and Bubbly,” just wait–there is a similar display of bad taste at best, racism and classism at worst, coming to Hartford real soon. Don’t try googling news items.
