This week HIMC presents audio testimony from Winter Soldier 2008. This week’s segment comes from the panel Racism and War: the Dehumanization of the Enemy, Part One. The Winter Soldier panels were largely censored by the mainstream media. In the coming weeks, RadioActive will rebroadcast some of these testimonies to help disseminate these eyewitness accounts from Iraq and Afghanistan. For more information go to www.ivaw.org

This week is WWUH’s marathon fundraiser, the larger of two such events per year, where listeners are called upon to finance nearly the entire budget. WWUH will turn 40 years old in July, and it’s always been non-commercial and listener-supported. Though housed at the University of Hartford, WWUH receives only a small $10,000 or so from the University - which is just a fraction of the total $110,000 yearly cost of operation. RadioActive is the Wednesday noon public affairs show on WWUH. Produced by Hartford IMC, RadioActive will soon be three years old. RadioActive would not exist if not for WWUH. Today on RadioActive, noon on WWUH 91.3 fm, our own Steve Fournier officially announces his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives. Fournier, who also writes CurrentInvective.com, will challenge veteran Congressperson John Larson who has failed to adequately address the crimes of the Bush administration. The House of Representatives is solely responsible for impeachment according to the Constitution. Fournier helped start Greater Hartford Impeach, a group of area residents concerned with executive accountability. As discussed here on Undercurrents, Greater Hartford Impeach presented Larson with 12 questions about the crimes of the Bush administration. The lackluster response of Larson’s office helped spur Fournier’s decision to challenge him this election cycle.

Radical historian and community radio legend, George Michael Evica, died this weekend. From the beginning of the HIMC, Evica was an inspiration and mentor. We are indebted to him and his legacy of investigative journalism and critical analysis.

Yesterday on my way to work I noticed that “POWER” 104.1 no longer had the commercial R&B/hip hop/rap programming. Instead, the station seems to have reverted to the 90’s style of grunge and modern rock. It’s not entirely cutting edge, but it’s not filled with absolutely annoying whine rock either. The best thing right now is something I feel sort of guilty about thinking of as a good thing– there’s an absence of d.j. banter. While I don’t know that I think computerized stations are the way to go, I will say that the reason I won’t listen to other hard rock stations with any consistency is because of the LCD crap that makes up the talk shows in the morning and evening drive time. If a computerized station means I don’t have to listen to racism, sexism, homophobia, and the word “retard” every three minutes, so be it.

This doesn’t replace alternative radio on the left hand side of the dial, but I’m glad that there’s more music I can tolerate listening to on my way to work.

Scott Harris, executive producer of the syndicated Between the Lines radio show, sent an urgent email this week to listeners of WPKN 89.5FM. It seems the new director, John Motavalli, has set his sights on Free Speech Radio News (FSRN). The national, community-based news program is heard M-F at 6pm on WPKN.

According to Harris, Motavalli’s desicion “is based primarily on his view that FSRN presents a ‘leftist’ slant on the news and he disparages the program as an ‘embarrassment.’” (more…)

Listening to The Rock 106.9 this weekend, you might have heard something along the lines of “Thank you for calling the offices of all the other radio stations. We’re not in this weekend…”

This promo sparked my interest. After all, having a DJ on staff is just good business for a radio station. So this Memorial Day, I found a list of the Hartford Radio Stations and turned on my radio. (more…)

The January 25 edition of Hartford’s weekly so-called “alternative,” the Hartford Advocate, presents yet another example of how the paper continues to fail its readership. “Star Power,” a lauditory waste of paper and webspace, makes disgraced radio host Troi Torain (aka Star, of the Star and Buc Wild show) look like a misunderstood philosopher and enterprising businessman instead of the bigot that he is. Writer Lani Buess gives Torain a free pass and goes a step further: she helps him hawk his new autobiography. How is selling a bigot and his book an alternative perspective? Mainstream press does it all the time. (more…)
