Tonight’s City Council will discuss a resolution condemning the Shirley Q. Liquor black face show, while acknowledging the show was canceled. But in their press release and numerous news reports, Chez Est owner, Gary Bechard, and Chez Est manager, Bryan Couzens have not apologized for their actions , nor taken ownership for their actions.
Activists have drafted a new 5 point plan to demand accountability and will present the demands tonight at City Council. Read the new demands here.

Kamora Herrington and Regina Dyton have just learned that the Owner (Gary Bechard) of the Chez Est has cancelled the “Shirley Q. Liquor” show. The understanding is that the Courant will have an article discussing the press release from the owner to the Courant explaining its reasons in cancelling the show. (more…)

I am sure by now everyone has heard about the CCSU campus newspaper article “Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It.” The Editors of the Recorder defended its publication stating that the author “Petroski” is a gifted satirist whose intended message fell on deaf ears. I must admit I have no idea whose ears were intended for statements like: rape as a magical experience or a that rape is a blessing for ugly women. (more…)

A coalition of queer, lgbt and ally individuals/organizations are expressing outrage at the Chez Est refusing to cancel their scheduled performance of Knipp’s “Shirley Q. Liquor”. Knipp and the manager of the Chez Est (Bryan Couzens), both white men
, defend Knipp’s violent, racist and misogynist portrayal of black women by stating it is not racism and they are not racists ~ it is simply entertainment. Clearly their actions of bringing this vial act to Hartford speaks volumes that they are supporting racism!
The Hartford City Council will take up a resolution on Tuesday, Feb. 13 condemning the scheduled performance. The Hartford City Council has asked to hear from the public regarding support of this resolution. Resoundly say I SUPPORT THIS RESOLUTION!
