Because of an error in the placement of a legal notice in the local paper, Hartford Greens had to reschedule their nominating convention. The convention will be Wednesday, March 12, 7 pm, at 74 Tremont Street, Hartford (my house). I’m seeking the party nomination for the first district congressional seat now held by Democrat John Larson, and Mike DeRosa is expected to accept the nomination for the state senate seat held by Democrat John Fonfara. The first district is an insect-shaped area that includes Hartford and all the contiguous towns, along with Bristol, Torrington, Winsted, New Hartford, and a couple of other mill towns in Litchfield County. The convention is open to all, and Greens from any of the towns in the district have a vote in the nominating process for the congressional seat. Registrars of voters are up for election this year in Hartford and other towns, and Greens are particularly interested in finding candidates for these positions. Over the coming months, voters will be surveying the damage done to the country by the two parties. If ever there was an opportune year for third-party candidates, this is it.

Last night was the February Hope Out Loud Coffeehouse, and it was held for the second time at Alchemy. Previously, it had been at La Paloma Sabanera, the Quaker Meeting House, Art Space, Cafe Verdi, and probably another place that I’m forgetting about.

Lord do I hate this time of year, for soooo many reasons. However, I was recently listening to a talk by Tim Flannery (who I heard in person at a DC event) that, as always, was utterly mesmerizing. Here’s a yacht club we can all get behind, and you don’t need to own a boat. Taking on the bottled water industry with a taste test that proves the obvious: tap water, bottled water, it’s all H2O, baby. And you gotta love the yacht club vice commodore’s sign off:

The folks over at Alchemy Juice Bar (now Green Vibration) are calling for a demonstration against former TV weatherman Art Horn. He is speaking tonight at the downtown branch of the Hartford Public Library. His presentation is called “Global Warming: Fact or Fiction.” The talk is set to begin at 6pm.

Horn calls global warming a “myth” and has been doing paid presentations since he was dumped from WVIT 30.

Demonstrators are asked to be at HPL for 5:30pm. The library is at 500 Main St.
Here is the latest call to action:

“Meet at the Hartford Public Library in protest to Art Horn calling Global Warming a HOAX and getting paid with our TAX DOLLARS to say so! We will be there with signs and cue cards please join us at 5:30!!! Bring a small flash light if you have one. The Hartford Courant is writing a story and we need people to SHOW UP!!!”

Next Thursday the 11th from 5 to 7:30 Knox Parks is celebrating the end of summer with their first (of many, I hope) Taste of CT Grown dinner featuring locally produced food at the Bushnell Park Cafe.  Tickets are $25, which is a good deal for an all local meal plus live music by Mosaic.  There is also a cash bar and prizes.  (more…)
