This Thursday May 22nd is the opening day of the Farmers’ Market at Billings Forge.  The market is located on Broad St. between Capitol and Russ, right next to the Firebox Restaurant.  Chef Jason Collin will be giving a cooking demonstration at 12:30 pm.

After last year’s successful first season the market will be open Mondays and Thursdays from 11 am to 2 pm with twice the vendors, prepared foods, picnic tables, and live music through the month of October.  Please visit their website for more information at www.hartfordfarmersmarket.org.

Julia and I enjoyed a night in downtown Hartford last night. We saw a great show, knocked a few back at The Russell, and then headed over to Aladdin for some much needed grub. Anywho, at Aladdin the pizza was cold, the falafel was soggy, and the homobigotry was flowing. (more…)

Starting January 1, 2008, seniors can no longer enjoy a discount at the former Wild Oats store in Bishops Corner.

In a curt message posted at the former Wild Oats store, visitors are informed that from now on there will be no discounts of any kind at Whole Foods. Previously, seniors who shopped at Wild Oats enjoyed a 10% discount. This discount was extended to students as well. (more…)

Word just came in that La Paloma Sabanera is closing.

The last day is Friday, December 28.

This is a huge loss for this community. Please spend some time (and money$$$) there before the 28th.

There is supposed to be new management in the spring, but I don’t have details.

Did anyone read the article in the Courant about the dairy farmer in Ellington who had to sell his cows earlier this year in order to keep his farm? According to the article, a quarter of the 210 dairy farms in Connecticut have closed in just in the last 4 years!

If you are interested in learning more about agriculture’s precarious situation from the farmers themselves there is a viewing of the documentary The Farmer’s Voice at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church (814 Asylum) on Friday night from 6 to 8. This film is specifically about CT farms. Knox Parks is hosting the potluck event.

This Saturday grab the Fall issue of the Hartford Undercurrent at Underween!

Underween is our annual costume party and celebration!

This year we’ll be launching the Fall 2007 edition of the Hartford
Undercurrent, having a costume contest, dancing, eating, and drinking.

The event is free and open to all ages.

Next Thursday the 11th from 5 to 7:30 Knox Parks is celebrating the end of summer with their first (of many, I hope) Taste of CT Grown dinner featuring locally produced food at the Bushnell Park Cafe.  Tickets are $25, which is a good deal for an all local meal plus live music by Mosaic.  There is also a cash bar and prizes.  (more…)

The Farmers’ Market at Billings Forge is hosting a free Kids’ Day tomorrow, Thursday August 16^th from 11 am to 3 pm at 559 Broad St near Capitol Ave in Hartford.  As part of the festivities circus duo Matica will wow and involve kids in an interactive circus act and Mike Kachuba and Jeff McQuillan will play fun, sing-along music from 11:30 to 1:30.  Vegetables will never be so much fun!

The Farmers’ Market at Billings Forge opens Thursday for the first time!  Hartford’s newest farmers’ market is located in the courtyard of the new Firebox Restaurant at 559 Broad St., a block south of Capitol Ave.  The market will be open every Thursday from 11 am to 3 pm through October and will feature fresh, local CT grown goods, including beef, cheese, and bread.  In addition, there will be live music and cooking demonstrations by Jason Collin, executive chef of the Firebox.

The opening will be celebrated with Mayor Eddie Perez, city council members, and friends at 12:30 pm.  Cooking demonstrations will take place at 12 pm and 1 pm and finger-style guitarist Glenn Roth will play.  Come brave the weather and get the best tasting, just-picked corn, blueberries, cherries, and great vegetables available this side of a farm!
