Bring Back the CCC, Our Parks Are Falling Apart
Posted by yossarian under environment , government , justice , labor , education1 Comment
Our state parks suffer from neglect, city kids need something to do this summer. What to do? During the Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps put idle young folks to work in state and national parks. Their work should be carried on by a new generation, as suggested in a letter in today’s Courant: (more…)

I cannot stomach anymore the arrogant condescending abuse of power that this board is exercising. How is it that my children, our children are subject to experimentation and being toyed with as if we have no recourse and are simply objects to be played with? The superintendent has declared Hartford High obsolete. He states that classroom education and holistic curriculum are outmoded and no longer effective. I recently spoke at Windsor High, Hall High and Conard High and no one is calling their high schools obsolete or outmoded. Are they so different from the rest of us? Or are they too white and rich to be played with? (more…)

Hartford Superintendant of Schools Steven Adamowski is to be commended for hiring Dr. James Thompson to take over administration of the city’s elementary schools. Thompson is the retired principal whose accomplishments at Simpson-Waverly School proved that it is possible to educate children in an urban elementary school. (more…)

I am here once again exercising my right to speak out as a citizen and resident of Hartford. I have to ask myself why are so few parents and taxpayers heard and listened to by the elected and appointed officials. Could it be because so few are aware of the hearings? Is it possible that there is a deliberate attempt to advertise the hearings at the last moment so as to deny people a chance to speak? I saw only one notice in the local newspaper about this public hearing and likewise the city budget hearing in April at Bulkeley High. It subverts democracy and undermines public confidence to allow only two minutes a month for public comment at Brd of Ed mtgs. (more…)

I no longer recognize this place I call home. It is not the people who live here that I don’t recognize, it is the way we act towards one another that I fail to recognize. The horror of Virginia Tech and the death of nine GI’s today in Iraq and the killing of hundreds of Iraqi civilians make me feel as if we all suffer from what is known as facial aphasia. That is the failure to recognize the human face. As the Buddhist say, sangha, the community is the foundation of humanity. As we destroy the social contract that supports us all we risk losing our humanity.
That social contract is what ensures that we provide for each other. The public schools have been slowly dismantled by the corporate ethics that reward market segmentation and Wall Street greed. We do not need a $90,000 a yr corporate money chaser. We do not need consultants who take the money and run. We do not need public relations officers who serve as gate keepers to keep the people away from the superintendent. The teachers, para’s, secretaries, guidance, facilites and security officers are the grunts who make everything work. I am so happy to hear that several teachers at HPHS are so enraptured that the school has one of the rarest telescopes and workable planetarium that they have offered to help get it ready to be part of a science curriculum. Talk about a rising star for Hartford. (more…)

In one of the most despicable pieces recently printed in the Hartford Courant, reporter Rachel Gottlieb hits a new low with “The Magnets’ Pull.”
Today, students at Weaver High School, which was the centerpiece of the article, were outraged by Gottlieb’s characterization of their school. (more…)

Confronting the Hartford Brd. of Education

Dave Ionno’s speech to the Hartford Board of Education this week:
How have we come to be here? I have been a father, husband, lover, friend and citizen these many years watching my children grow and learn within the embrace of public education in Hartford. I attended public schools all over this nation and in other countries courtesy of Uncle Sugar, as a military dependent (brat). It was where I learned to become a citizen. It was why I enlisted in the US Army and volunteered for and went to Viet Nam. (more…)
