But they, so perfect is their misery
Do not their foul disfigurement perceive’
Milton, Comus
I propose herein, a modest proposal to the American people in light of the economic and political disaster about to befall us. In 1729 Jonathan Swift wrote an essay wherein he advocated that the Irish, in order to alleviate the dire living conditions of British rule, breed and slaughter and then devour their own children. He alludes to an American friend who extols the tasty nutrition of year old milk-fed youngsters. This drastic satirical essay was written in reaction to a killing campaign waged by the Protestant/Anglican English against the Catholic papist Irish who were viewed as subhuman beings reproducing like rabbits out of control. I propose no such excess, as we already devour and destroy our young for the corporate Wall Street vampires and cannibals with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here is my modest proposal.
Firstly, no business or public entity shall operate buildings or equipment 24/7 except for essential services, such as Police, Fire and Medical. (more…)

Progressives are often heard to complain that the corporate-owned media fails to carry news about campaigns for human rights or struggles against police repression, much less news of developments in revolutionary struggles. This “self-censorship” really shouldn’t be a big surprise: only a handful of huge corporations control most of the print and network news media and they obviously have a stake in the class struggle that puts them on the other side of the fence from most liberation fighters.
But as we are now learning, there is one thing even more nauseating than the corporate media remaining silent . . . and that’s when it decides to speak out. Just look at the drumbeat of media coverage about Tibetan “resistance” to China’s “occupation.” (more…)

“Fred” is the Norwegian word for peace. It’s among the first few words I learned when I traveled to Norway earlier this month. US Labor Against the War was invited by the Norwegian Peace Initiative to send a labor representative, and I got the job. (more…)

This is the text of a letter I sent to The Hartford Courant a few days ago. They didn’t print it.
“You wouldn’t know it from reading this paper, but there was a four-day conference last week in Washington featuring the testimony of dozens of veterans of the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. For some reason, we’d never heard what they had to tell us. (more…)

Congressman John Larson made an appearance in Elmwood yesterday to rationalize his failure to end the occupation of Iraq, an occupation he opposed from the outset. He blamed the president. He blamed Republicans. He blamed the Senate. He blamed the system. And he didn’t take so much as a teaspoonful of personal responsibility. (more…)

Rules of engagement–ROE for short–don’t involve prenuptial etiquette but the use of deadly force against human beings. I watched a couple of dozen young Americans testify to their personal experiences with rules of engagement, and their testimony was compelling. These kids were given the power of life and death over defenseless people in places far, far from home, and it hurt them grievously. (more…)
