This week is WWUH’s marathon fundraiser, the larger of two such events per year, where listeners are called upon to finance nearly the entire budget. WWUH will turn 40 years old in July, and it’s always been non-commercial and listener-supported. Though housed at the University of Hartford, WWUH receives only a small $10,000 or so from the University - which is just a fraction of the total $110,000 yearly cost of operation. RadioActive is the Wednesday noon public affairs show on WWUH. Produced by Hartford IMC, RadioActive will soon be three years old. RadioActive would not exist if not for WWUH. Now’s your chance to support both the show and station. Any level of support helps. The station only asks for what it needs. If you want to support RadioActive specifically, call between 12 noon and 12:30pm today.
Call (860) 768-4008 or 1-800-444-9984 to pledge your support for truly independent, alternative radio. There are of course thank-you gifts including the 40th anniversary t-shirt. Be a part of local radio history!

HARTFORD: On Monday, February 25th Professor Jeff Ogbar (UConn) will be speaking at Capital Community College at noon in the Community Room (second floor) about his book Hip-Hop Revolution. The hour-long talk is part of CCC’s Black History Month Events. Their press release says:
In this groundbreaking book, Jeffrey O. G. Ogbar celebrates hip-hop and confronts the cult of authenticity that defines its essential character-that dictates how performers walk, talk, and express themselves artistically and also influences the consumer market. Hip-Hop Revolutionis a balanced cultural history that looks past negative stereotypes of hip-hop as a monolith of hedonistic, unthinking noise to reveal its evolving positive role within American society. Changes at CCH
If it weren’t for the awesome show that took over the big gallery at Real Art Ways last night, I would have felt totally disenchanted. They’ve raised their fee for the Creative Cocktail Hour, which I won’t complain about because it helps support an art gallery. Except now that art gallery is selling out by getting corporate sponsorship at the CCH. At the Hartford IMC, we are well aware that it costs money to operate, and that getting financial support is not the easiest thing. But damn, don’t sell out. Not to Target.
That’s right, Target. Their red and white logo was projected onto the walls during the light show that went along with the music. That’s fucking tacky. (more…)

Our preoccupation with the U. S. presidency will be manifest over the next few months, as professional politicians vie for stewardship over the executive branch.
We might profitably reflect that most of our presidents have been narcissistic autocrats whose leadership injured the country. (more…)

Hartford Parents Not Getting the Attention or Respect We Deserve

Feb 19, 2008 Hartford Public High School I see it on the faces of everyone I meet. The Shock and Awe as we are all subjected to the constant bombardment by corporate con men. The experts and economic hit men are brought in to flood our eyesight with the facts and figures of failure. We are constantly assailed with statistics that show our children are failing, teachers are faulted for their inability to raise test scores, unions are hammered for resisting the gutting of contractual rights, parents are vilified for not being able to control the behavior of their children. We are stunned by the constant drumming of fear. Fear of terrorism, fear of disease, fear of economic recession, fear of unintended consequences. All of this is used purposefully by the change agents, the vision masters who have a program that will correct all of our concerns if we just simply surrender. If we give over our constitutional rights to participate and be willing sheep led to the slaughter house, all will be well. It is time to put our feet down and resist. (more…)

Not sure this has been reported in the CT Blogosphere yet, but if not I encourage folks to take serious look at this bill raised on Feb 13.
