Day Three and Beyond
by Greg Tate
The other night I talked about Schwerner, Goodman and Cheney. Were their ghosts laid to rest when their murderers were brought to justice or not until last night? That is what they gave their lives for right? The day when a salt and pepper audience could gather in a room and cheer the landslide victory of a black candidate for President in a primary in a southern state. I don’t know. (more…)

A Health and Human Resources Cmte hearing, chaired by Dr. Larry Deutsch, was held at council chambers on January 24th at 5:45pm. The anti-war resolution was drafted as an ongoing proposal to be presented at Monday’s (Jan.28th) Council meeting at 6:30pm.
The Thursday(24th) Cmte hearing was attended by employees of the City Health dept., myself representing Veterans for Peace and the Green party, Nick Carbone and several administrators and clients from the city shelters. On the agenda also was the ongoing struggle of shelters to stay open for the people and the need for more funding. Shelter workers noted that veterans were a significant portion of the shelter population. Nick Carbone presented figures attesting to Dept of Corrections dropping off released convicts in Hartford with no money and no shelter. Some of these individuals are veterans. The VA has dropped off veterans in Hartford with no money or shelter. It was agreed by those of us who spoke for the record that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had a serious negative effect on the lives of people and the economy of Hartford. (more…)

Time to Change the World
by Greg Tate
The first thing I noticed in the light of day about Columbia, SC is two things actually. One, gas is really cheap. $2.60 for regular is the lowest I saw. Two, everything is named after Strom Thurmond! Except of course for the things that are named after Robert Calhoun. I was instructed today that Mr. Calhoun was one of the intellectual founders of the secession. South Carolina being the first state that seceded. (more…)

First Night
by Greg Tate
Fly into Charlotte NC, to save money. I was picked up by two young friends who drove me to Columbia, SC. I am in the hotel now and heading for bed before I start tomorrow to do whatever it is they want me to to get out the vote for Senator Obama. The drive was surreal. It took me immediately to the first time I ever remember coming south, sometime mid sixties, with my little sister who is now asleep in the other room. (more…)

Do you think broadcasters and cablecasters should televise this once a day? Every day commercials tell us to buy this beer or that car and we do. What would happen if this message from the American Friends Service Committee got the exposure it deserves?
