Cornell just relayed to us that he spoke with NAACP President Scot X. Esdaile by telephone. There is going to be a meeting in Plainfield, CT this Tuesday about the racial incident involving a 16 year old black youth [See QWB blog entry]. Time for the meeting is still undetermined. It is critical that Queers Without Borders, HIMC and many other organizations and activists be there in support. I will be going so if interested please contact me. Remember this meeting is being held by the same US Justice System that has prosecuted the fewest hate crimes in ten years! Not to mention their white washing (no pun intended) of the Jena 6 hate crime by white youth and a white racist district attorney!

When remembering the past many of us confuse history with heritage, or as historian Michael Kammen calls it “heritage syndrome.” Kammen, a professor of history at Cornell,
describes the syndrome as “an impulse to remember what is attractive or flattering and to ignore all the rest.” This past week, in Alabama, activists attempted to expose the dark side of heritage and to honor history. (more…)

Stop the Raids!
Statewide Public Meeting to Oppose the ICE Raids in Hartford
Tuesday, Nov. 27, 7:30 p.m.
St. Augustine’s Church (in the church basement), 10 Campfield Ave., Hartford
Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 21 Hartford residents
from the Brazilian neighborhood of Parkville over the first two weeks
in November. Its agents barged into people’s homes before sunrise and
dragged them away. They surrounded a local buffet restaurant and
arrested its employees. They crossed the street and raided a car
mechanic’s garage. They have made Parkville into a ghost-town.
Merchants have no customers. Stores close early. Restaurants are
empty. Residents keep to their homes in fear of the next ICE attack.
Some have fled the city. (more…)

Perhaps our eminent Governor should take a moment out of her daily routine of acting as mini-mouse in protecting Connecticut’s good white suburban population from its career criminals, parolees and the like, to read a report officially released today. [Or alternatively lock up the Career Corporate Criminals who truly ravage the security of Connecticut’s homeland and release those imprisoned and victimized by her system of (in)justice!… Ah but I digress as usual]. This report is by the JFA Institute titled “Unlocking America: Why and How to Reduce America’s Prison Population.” To highlight a few pertinent points: (more…)

Take a moment, would you, and step back from the day to day barrage of infotainment and instant analysis of just-breaking major/minor/non news by radio, TV and blogsville blowhards to take a look at how we select our supreme leader. By the time Connecticut gets in the presidential sweepstakes, the winners have practically been chosen. That just ain’t fair. Big money and the wierdness of major party politics makes a mockery of the democratic process. Nothing against Iowans and New Hampshirites, but how’s about letting us in the game when our votes actually are worth something. Then maybe our would be favorite son Presidential wannabes wouldn’t have to go live in the mid West when they could be doing what we elected them for in the first place back here at home. (more…)

Did anyone read the article in the Courant about the dairy farmer in Ellington who had to sell his cows earlier this year in order to keep his farm? According to the article, a quarter of the 210 dairy farms in Connecticut have closed in just in the last 4 years!
If you are interested in learning more about agriculture’s precarious situation from the farmers themselves there is a viewing of the documentary The Farmer’s Voice at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church (814 Asylum) on Friday night from 6 to 8. This film is specifically about CT farms. Knox Parks is hosting the potluck event.

John Perkins is the author of two books that expose the raping and pillaging of developing countries by economic assassins sent by the multi-national corporations to privatize national industries and degrade living standards. The books are entitled Confessions of an Economic Hit Man and The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals and the Truth about Global Corruption. He was employed by the World Bank and IMF(International Monetary Fund). His job was simple. He would meet with the dictators and wealthy elite bribe them and promise their children access to the best schools in America while they would hand over national resources and industries to the multi-national corporations. This resulted in privatization of factories and natural resources, depressing wages and earnings of workers and allowing environmental pollution because there was no enforcement or recognition of health or environmental protection laws. People in Indonesia try to live on $2 dollars a day as a direct result of the economic assassins.
The economic hit men have appeared in Hartford. The out sourcing and hiring of consultants by the city is economic assassination. (more…)

impeachment[3] Comments
I received this email yesterday from six different correspondents:
“There is an impeachment resolution submitted in the House of Representatives to impeach VP Richard Cheney. Nancy Pelosi is telling groups who support this that she will respond if she receives 10,000 hand written letters. Please send Nancy Pelosi a hand-written letter telling her you support Resolution 333.
The address is:
The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives
235 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-0508
Phone: (202) 225-4965
Fax: (202) 225-8259″
I decided to check this out, and I called the Speaker’s office in Washington, DC. The staffer who answered denied the report. The aide told me that members of Pelosi’s staff are aware of the report, but the aide wouldn’t confirm that the Speaker herself was aware of it. He said the report is ”baseless” and that she never made such a statement.
The aide wouldn’t say whether the staff would count the letters received, but he assured me that every letter gets opened, and if 10,000 letters show up, they’re not going to just toss them in the basket. So don’t feel used if you sent such a letter (as I did). In fact, Pelosi’s response may be another good reason to send a letter if you haven’t already, even knowing she won’t heed it.
