Recently I borrowed a couple crudely made Hartford Whalers DVDs from my cousin. One specifically highlighted the 1986 team which stunned the hockey world with it’s end-of-season run and first round playoff dominance. Thus began the first of six straight appearances in the post-season for the Whalers, just five years into their NHL tenure. They followed up in 1987 by winning their first and only Adams Division championship, the highest achievement of the team’s too short existence. The other DVD sampled some highlights and fights from the early 1990s. The videos brought back memories. They also made me see something about the team, in particular that 1986 team, that was distinctly Hartford. It made me more than disappointed that they left Hartford, now ten years ago. It made me sad.

The Hartford Green Party has endorsed David Ionno, of Warrenton Avenue, for a seat on the Court of Common Council. Ionno pledged to bring Green values to City Hall, placing emphasis on the long-term future of the city and its residents. Ionno asserts that the diversion of public resources to warfare is one of the principal issues facing city voters. (more…)

Three strikes or three blind mice?

On September 11 (an all too ominous date), the CT Judiciary Committee will begin hearing testimony regarding sentencing and inmate release processes, as well as sites for potential new prisons. This hearing comes on the heels of a suburban backlash to the Cheshire murders. There are calls for strengthening Connecticut’s three strike laws through a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison, replicating California’s three-strikes law. (more…)

One Pill Makes You Larger, One Pill Makes You Small……

….and the one the Army doc gives you is the freakiest of them all. At veterans centers in West Haven and around the country, researchers are trying to build a better U.S. soldier, one who doesn’t freak out in battle or return home to a lifetime haunted by bloody flashbacks. They are looking at drugs that can eliminate post traumatic stress syndrome. How about a pill to keep Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld or the next set of fearless leaders from sending other people’s children to war in the first place?

According to NPR and the rest of the commercial media, civilized people are shocked at the utter venality of football star Michael Vick, who has admitted setting his dogs on other dogs in mortal combat, all for his amusement and the amusement of his friends. (more…)

Often I feel like the Slowskys, the talking turtles from the high-speed internet ads who relish their supposedly slower-than-cable dsl connection. In one of the ads, Bill Slowsky downloads some file at a snail’s pace, and he says “aaahh, me time.” I’m more and more convinced that the human race is hurling itself into extinction. I think the human race can learn from Bill Slowsky. As a species, we’re embarrassingly inept at solving the self-created problem of our demise. There’s too much money to be made. So, I’ve decided to enjoy what’s left as much as I can.

Historians and military experts gave the President a failing grade for his comparison of Vietnam and Iraq at the national Veterans of Foreign Wars convention Wednesday. Are there any armchair warrior/historians out there who agree with Bush? Who wants to send Cheney to re-education camp? Let’s have a show of hands. (more…)

More Hiroshima Day Video: Berman and Prewitt

I posted additional video coverage of this year’s Hiroshima Day Observance in Hartford, August 6, 2007. Features Rabbi Donna Berman and Prof. Charlie Prewitt, discussing nukes and other peace issues. Prewitt discusses his experiences on the Manhattan Project and some under-reported presidential directives that will further restrict civil liberties. See Talk Nation Radio for more on this issue.

Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call in regard to my article in the latest Undercurrents magazine, on Downtown apartments. Jude Gray from the property that I had difficulty contacting, The Lofts at Main & Temple, was on the other end of the line. “I read your article . . .” she began. And then she agreed to give me a tour of the Lofts. I was pleasantly surprised and stopped downtown on Wednesday morning.
The lofts are still under minor construction, being painted as I entered the lobby. Gray stated that they were at about 80% capacity. Rents range from about a grand a month for a studio to three to four for a two bedroom loft on the eighth floor, according to Rent.com. Parking is available for tenants, which is a departure from other higher end apartments in the area, but using the Taking Care (exercise) Center is extra.
My tour went well, after a brief brownout in the elevator. I always find slight moment of horror amusing on any tour. Lofts are only available on the top floor and the complex uses much less marble and granite than others in the area. The apartments I looked at were quite spacious.
