Tragedy in Ches… er Hartford
Posted by jerimarie liesegang under Hartford , it's the stupid media , crime , race1 Comment
Perhaps I am the only one who sees an irony in the media and subsequent public reaction to the “Tragedy in Cheshire.” Obviously triple murder should receive the attention of our outrage and shock. However, after seeing for more than five days this murder dominate the headlines of the Courant and most media outlets, I continually find myself asking: “And where is the same level of outrage to the tragic deaths and consequent tragic impact on families that are occurring in our Urban cities?” Is it because the media and public feel that the murders of urban youths and adults (primarily of color and poor) are a natural consequence of “their” environment? That the white wealthy people of the suburbs are innocents to whom only peace, justice and the benefits of the American way should pertain? I can only read this as a further deepening of the institutionalized racism of our media and public. (more…)

Defending Our Community

HARTFORD: On June 30, 2007, Carlos Alvarado’s young life ended under questionable circumstances. Police Chief Roberts maintains the innocence of Hartford officers on the scene, though two eyewitnesses claim that Alvarado did not jump from the third floor window–they say that he was pushed. This has not been the first case of possible police misconduct in Hartford in recent years.
In the early morning hours of June 20, 2007 ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raided the apartment of Antonio Diaz, Enendi Diaz, and Norma Velacruz. This raid was based on a false deportation order for Velacruz. As a result, all three had been sent to a Rhode Island detention center. Before this, ICE raided another Hartford home on March 15 of this year.
The Free People’s Movement, considering the terrorism of police brutality and homeland security to be inherently connected, gathered at the corner of Center and Mather Streets before marching to City Hall yesterday morning. (more…)

Following is a statement from the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty (CNADP) Concerning the Murders of the Petit Family in Cheshire.
Wednesday, July 25, 2007
The CNADP is horrified by the terrible deaths of the Petit family members in
Cheshire. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Petit, and all the surviving loved ones of Mrs. Petit and her daughters. All of us wish to support the survivors in their healing. The CNADP believes very strongly, however, that calling for the death penalty for the suspects in this case is NOT the way to support the survivors of this horrific tragedy. When I returned from the radio show last week, I saw a fat ‘possum walking around on the hatchway. Given that a few days before I witnessed a squirrel taking a leak on the back porch, this was cute by comparison. Since I’m usually wide awake after hosting a show, I watched the ‘possum wander around the yard for about 15 minutes before trying to call it a night. That was on Wednesday morning, around 3:30. On Saturday, it became clear that the ‘possum wasn’t looking for food, but for one of her babies. (more…)

Depression has a lot of quirks to it. It’s a disease that can make you feel off balance in a lot of ways. It makes you more likely to use drugs and die of all sorts of other diseases, such as alcoholism. Fortunately, there’s a common remedy for all this, which doesn’t involve drugs or visits that cost $150/hour.
Exercise is a very important activity in the race against depression. Keeping active produces feel good chemicals that counteract that general down in the dumps feeling. And the best place to exercise is, of course, your local fitness center. So, being a person prone to such things as (say) severe manic depression. And, having not frequented (said) local fitness center, since I lived in New York. I figured it was time to tour the best clubs that Hartford had to offer.

NYC’s Homophobic/Misogynist/Ageist/Racist system of InJustice
On Aug 16, 2006, seven young African-American, lesbian identified friends from Newark (now known as the Lesbian 7) ended up in a fight with a man in the West Village following his repeated verbal and physical attacks on them. Though the instigator in the confrontation, the man was never charged and in May 2005, three of the women entered into plea agreements and received six-months in prison. On June 15th the remaining four (ages 19, 20, 20 and 24) received sentences ranging from 3.5 to 11 years in prison. Their crime was simply defending themselves from a homophobic/misogynist attack by a man who choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them and threatened sexual assault – all because they were lesbians who refuted his sexual advances.
