While generally an overdramatic description seldom worthy of it’s casual use, I can say that I experienced a true feeling of “impending doom” last night as I fished out an email from my junk mail box from Punk Planet magazine. There was a time where an email titled “to our subscribers” meant nothing more than an announcment that a glitch at the mail house would delay your issue, or that there was a special renewal notice waiting for you. Now these emails mean only one thing: the demise of a worthy, vital publication. (more…)

The one thing I didn’t expect from my small apartment in the West End: the wonders of brick. Oh yes, sweet brick. My apartment hasn’t gone above 75 all year. In my last apartment, with high tech air conditioning, I could only get the temperature down to about 78 in my room, by this time of year. (more…)

Last night City Council passed a resolution to provide space for a new monument to honor
Hartford’s war veterans. The monument is to be a big granite pillar. The location of this gigantic glans? Why it’s the beleaguered corner of Broad and Farmington!
First, Perez destroyed the park that was there and then tried to build a school there without the consent of the state. Now Hartford will have another marker to murder and mayhem. The Council was prudent though. There’s a back door for the project: the monument “can be easily relocated if the site is needed for another use in the future.” Once bitten, twice shy with Broad and Farmington, I guess.

The state legislative session came to a disappointing close this year for members of the ARDMBR 99 Coalition. ARDMBR 99, which stands for Act to Remember the Dave Matthew’s Band Riots of 99, was rallying support to declare an official day of remembrance in Connecticut for the August 1999 riots at the Meadows Music Theatre.
“We came so close this year,” said campaign coordinator Jamie Sparks. “We had the backing of two key legislators, and we had some really successful messaging campaigns. The ‘Remember ‘99′ car magnets were wildly popular, as was our ‘Out From Under the Table’ rally in Bushnell park.”
