The following message was received this morning by Robert Nave, Executive Director of the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty (CNADP). In a statement accompanying this release, Nave states that CNADP is remaining neutral during this action.
Nave does not know how many of the 8 inmates on death row are participating in the
hunger strike or how many of them were involved in the drafting of this statement.
It is suggested that if you have questions that you contact the Department of
Correction or Northern Correctional Institution.

From Ken Krayeske:
Cliff Thornton’s campaign for governor continues to make waves not just in Connecticut, but across the country.
Right now on http://www.Current.tv, a short documentary videographer Dave Pond made of the campaign and its efforts to get in the televised debates is ranked number one nationally, and if we can maintain that number one ranking until Monday evening, then the video will be aired on national tv. About 4,500 people have already watched.
Check it out at Current.tv or at Ken Krayeske’s site:

Watch, register and vote for Cliff. For democracy. (plus, it’s good practice for November). And don’t forget to forward this widely. Thanks again for all your help.

That headline is the mainstream media’s wet dream. Of course, little do they know, there’s some truth to it. Don Imus bears some responsibility for the demise of Anna Nicole Smith, but he has many accomplices - like Howard Stern, 50 Cent, and “man” media like Maxim. Justice has supposedly been done, and everyone is feeling good about themselves for condemning the easily condemned. Imus after all expressed a two-for of bigotry - racism and sexism. And he did so against targets so unworthy of his reactionary sentiments - the Rutgers women’s basketball team. What’s lost in this discussion are the thousands of would-be Imuses who echo his beliefs on a daily basis, who make shock jock radio, and other bigoted media, profitable. So before you pat yourself on the back, America, it’s time to take a hard look at yourself. (more…)

Developments in the suddenly magazine-crazed Connecticut publishing community are coming fast and furious. Just this past week it was reported that White Publishing, parent company of the old Connecticut LIFE magazine, picked up the publishing rights to the faltering and debt-ridden Hartford Magazine. Undercurrents discussed the possibility of two more glossy magazines back here (take a peak at who has been commenting).
It seems as though this new Frankenstein magazine is going to give up on chasing Yuppies. As the Hartford Business Journal reports, Michael Guinan of Marketing Resource Consultants (former publishers of the magazine) says the magazine will continue to focus on the 30- to 65- demographic. “It’s just not our goal to be in the 20s magazine,” says Guinan.
Go get’um CT Slant!

One of the favorite writers of Veterans of Future Wars, Vonnegut’s Slaughter House Five should be required reading for all high school students as an antidote for those tempted to view military service as an honorable calling. Ditto for Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. It’s not surprising the two hung out together. In a little New Yorker piece by Vonnegut after Heller died, he wrote (more…)

That’s gotta be my favorite quote in the documentary “An Unreasonable Man”, playing at Real Arts Ways through Thursday. It is uttered by James Ridgeway, a longtime progressive journalist and collaborator with Ralph Nader on investigations into the auto industry in the 1960s. He is describing how some liberal Democrats smeared Nader after the 2000 Presidential election and how they tried to subvert the electoral process to prevent Nader from running. Anyone who was disheartened and/or disgusted by these tactics should go see this film. And bring any of your liberal friends who blame Ralph for Gore blowing the 2000 election. If the Nader attackers had put the same energy into the election, they would have won. Liberals can be such whiners, can’t they?

This week, the HIMC is presenting you with a Very Special Opportunity. No, we’re not trying to sell you timeshares. We’re fundraising! If you’re on our mailing list, you’ll be getting a letter in the mail in the vicinity of tomorrow or Saturday. If you don’t receive a letter, or just can’t wait for it to arrive, why don’t you mosey on to www.hartfordimc.org and drop some spare change our way?
One great thing about donating to the Hartford Independent Media center is that you can be absolutely sure what your money is supporting. Kerri will not be adding to her multi-million-dollar artwork collection (we think). Our very own Bottle and Can Man might have a few ideas for creative expenditures, but we’re not letting him anywhere near the petty cash. Every single penny goes towards printing and associated expenses.
Donating to the HIMC keeps the Independent Media coming. We can’t do it without your support. Run, don’t walk, and give today!
