Neither to absolve nor blame, I need to ask those who are critiquing Al Gore for his brand of environmentalism, well, what were you expecting?
Al Gore, just like any other politician, should not necessarily be regarded as a model for good behavior. But, we can’t dismiss him entirely either. Clinging to absolutism is to overlook the reality of human nature. In other words, I’d like to have Bill Clinton’s charisma, but would never feel the need to emulate his intimate relationships. The front line soldiers doing the dirty work of the empire deserve better than slave wages and a suspension of their constitutional rights. The Veterans of Future Wars advocates a wage and benefits package that would make traveling far from home and getting your ass shot off by (more…)

Seeing as how Hartford and West Hartford get all the attention when it comes to anti-war rallies, and that I’m originally from “East of the River,” I decided to head out to the Connecticut Opposes the War (COW) meeting in Vernon this afternoon. In the spirit of the inverted pyramid style of journalism, I’ll give you the punchline up front– it was refreshing to meet new people for a change, and I left actually feeling optimistic about the direction of activism.

I was hooked in the eye by the warrior ethos from the day I could read. I am the first born son of a career US Army officer. My father is a retired Colonel who gave 35 yrs of his life to the military. He not only gave himself but he gave us to the Green Machine. My mother and my four siblings were all camp followers. We trailed after my father serving on posts all over the world and the USA. Overseas every US military post is a target and in the real sense an army of occupation. We would be the first to perish in a nuclear exchange or invasion. Our lives were hostage to the military industrial complex, so I decided to become what I was living- a warrior. (more…)

In February 2007, Gallup polled Americans about superficial qualities in a presidential candidate. Asked if they’d be willing to vote for a “generally well-qualified” candidate with the following characterisitics, here’s how the tally went in the Feb. 9-11 poll.
Black 94%
Jewish 92%
A woman 88%
Hispanic 87%
Mormon 72%
Married for third time 67%
72 years of age 57%
A homosexual 55%
An atheist 45%
As usual, however, I’m interested in a deeper analysis. I am happy to see that as homophobic and hateful as America is toward homosexuals, we still hate atheists even more! How long will it be until we forbid atheists from getting married?

Today is the last day for the job (scab) fairs, plus negotiations have now been pushed to their latest deadline: midnight tonight.
Keep up with the calls to Stop & Shop: 1-800-767-7772
Tell them that you support the employees and you won’t cross a picket line.
