Over the last month there has appeared a passionate and sincere dialogue regarding a white woman’s false accusations that she was raped by a black man. Subsequently she recanted her statement and indicated that she was raped by a man she knew. As a transactivist I work closely with many communities and two of these are Cornell Lewis’ Men of Color Initiative and the Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services. Both organizations have weighed in, at polar ends, on this issue and I truly understand both perspectives; however at every juncture we must continually confront and challenge the Institutionalized Racism of this country and its people. The following is statement that I and other members of the Task Force for Race, Class and Social Justice (a multi-community, multi-racial coalition that seeks to expose and challenge interlocking oppressions in Connecticut) released, prior to the Hartford Police recently reversing their initial decision not to seek charges. The Courant ran a front page story today on the closing of Timothy’s restaurant. This is a huge loss for the neighborhoods. It seems everyone is in shock and quite depressed about this news. In 32 years, Timothy’s has touched many lives.
Please take a moment and share any thoughts and memories about the restaurant, the food, Timothy, and anything else you’d like to share. (more…)

Whenever I need to rile myself up, work myself into a sputtering, wheel pounding, red hot rage, I tune the car radio to WTIC AM for a dose of chicken hawk rabble rousing. And they never disappoint. The other day I heard Jim Vicevich, the morning chicken hawk (more…)

The trouble with class warfare is that it’s killing the wrong people. All the casualties are on one side. The ruling class inflicts suffering and prospers, while the rest of us climb all over each other trying to survive the onslaught. (more…)

Yes, I’ll admit it. It’s me. I am poisonous to the giver of life
as we know it. I am toxic and I will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. As much as I like to assume that I am environmentally friendly, I am a major part of the problem. We all are. And the sooner we admit that to ourselves, the better. (more…)

The New Haven Independent follows up on the Lieberman party hijacking.
An excerpt:
“We’re doing all this in good fun,” but when The New York Times takes notice, there’s a chance to push a platform. Orman said the party was too young to have made plans to run a candidate, but he could see running candidates for smaller state offices against Democrats who had supported Lieberman over Lamont in November, to “hold them accountable.”

Undercurrents just came from the demonstration against Senator Joe Lieberman
this afternoon. Approximately 45 folks braved the bitter cold and took to the windswept streets of Hartford to protest Lieberman’s support for an increase in troops in Iraq. The demonstrators gathered at the corner of Market and State. Many held signs and handed out leaflets to downtown workers and folks gathered at the Constitution Plaza bus stop. Two flag-draped coffins were strategically positioned at the corner.

Lesson of the Day, Citizen Soldiers:
When buying a war, let’s get all the details down in writing before the first shot is fired.
(By the by, does anyone have a ballpark figure for what this war is costing?)
Veterans of Future Wars is all about keepin’ things real, just the fax, Jax, going into battle with eyes wide open, you know what I’m sayin? We like to promote full throttle, pedal to the metal, petal(flower) to the medal (posthumous), leave everything on the playing field/battlefield.. If something is worth (more…)

New Haven1 Comment
After four years of wrangling with structural planning and budget overruns, New Haven is finally going to let Veterans Memorial Coliseum die. Early Saturday morning, most downtown streets as well as small stretches of both I-91 and I-95 will be closed in anticipation of the big boom. (more…)

Time to vote again for local Chicken Hawk of the Year. Tell us who you think deserves the title. Could it be Joe Lieberman? How about Jim Vicevich, WTIC AM talk radio guy? Those two stalwart cheerleaders for sending young Americans to kill and die for the greater glory of the Chicken Hawk in Chief George Bush are the top vote getters so far. Just 17 more voting days before the winner is announced on Feb. 3. Register your vote by clicking on Comments. Voted already? Hell, that’s okay, vote again. Vent some spleen while you are at it. To be a chicken hawk means loving war but from a safe distance.
