As usual, the Hartford Advocate leaves much to be desired. This time it’s the “Lush Life” Christmas edition. Click here for the article. Steve and Edie attempt to compile the “wildest fantasies” of readers and friends about Hartford. Problem #1: is this wishlist for Hartford, or just downtown, or more specifically for the Mayor Perez, gentrification model for downtown? The headline suggests these wishes are for the city at large, but downtown ultimately shapes the character of the list. Problem #2: myopism - many of the city’s valuable treasures are lost in the nearsightedness of the readership, and more importantly the authorship, who should know better. (more…)

In searching for some information on Connecticut photographers, I stumbled across the Connecticut Art Scene blog. Freelance journalist Hank Hoffman maintains the site and offers some fairly in-depth reviews of a variety of shows, most in New Haven spaces but many in spots all over the state, from an upscale New London gallery to a tattoo parlor in Naugatuck.
His most recent piece opens:
“Step inside the stately John Slade Ely House and glance to the right. There stands the imposing figure of Caveman Robot. And I can’t but wonder: Is the gleeful crazed grin on Caveman Robot’s face symbolic of Jason Robert Bell’s disdain for the pretensions of the high art world?” (more…)

Anywhere, anytime, says the highest court in Israel, you or I may legally be targeted for elimination by the Israeli government. The court decision, reported in the Israeli press but hardly mentioned here, involved attacks on Palestinians suspected of plotting against Israel, but the judgment should hold up regardless of who is targeted or where the killing takes place.

I discovered this great resource for Hartford info. Trinity College has created these interactive maps for one of its classes, called Invisible Cities. They have maps for educational resources, problem properties, food resources, historical sites, and youth hangouts. The maps are adaptations of Google maps with custom points of reference plotted throughout city. (more…)

I ran across The Good Book Business, an article on the Bible publishing industry, in this week’s New Yorker. And it really creeped me out.

HartBeat Ensemble’s adaptation of Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” has been playing at the Charter Oak Cultural Center since December 1 and will continue through the month of December. “Ebeneeza – A Hartford Holiday Carol”, wonderfully integrates Hartford’s history and diversity into an emotionally driven and intricately creative version of “A Christmas Carol”. Ebeneeza, played by Debra Walsh is an elderly Italian woman who grew up on Front Street and was once a successful realtor. (more…)

There was a lot of talk this week about holocaust-deniers. The president of Iran, the notorious Ahmadinejad, hosted a week-long symposium to study whether the Nazis’ attempted extermination of European Jews actually happened as has been recounted by the survivors.
Whether or not it happened as history now records, we can say with some assurance that there were millions of Jewish deaths that wouldn’t have occurred but for the Nazis. The Germans of those times denied afterwards that they knew anything about the labor camps and the cattle-car deportations, but they knew enough. Today, it’s a crime in Germany to deny the historical account, which puts the Jewish toll at about six million.
It is not a crime in the USA to deny the toll resulting from our nation’s invasion and occupation of Iraq. On the contrary, it’s fashionable. (more…)
