On June 29, a group of Philadelphia kids whose camp bought a $1950 summer membership at a suburban swim club arrived for their first swim, only to be faced with racist comments and actions by pool members and staff. White swimmers in the pool got out of the water and pool staff told the camp group, which was mostly made up of black children, that no minorities are allowed to swim there. A camper heard a mother saying she was worried that the campers would do something to her kid.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, pool manager John Duesler explained things by saying, “There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion …..and the atmosphere of the club.” Now it turns out that this swim club, which was going to be sued by the camp, might have to close because it can’t afford a lawsuit.
