Happy Equal Pay Day

moneyI just found out it’s equal pay day! You gotta love that wage gap! Women earn on average 77.8% what men earn – the gap is greater for most women of color. Why today? Today’s date symbolizes how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. (And Tuesday is the day on which women’s wages catch up to men’s wages from the previous week.) (more…)

Fuzzy Math and Public Housing

Amidst controversy over a mysterious memo, the Hartford Housing Authority has been seeking developers to demolish, then rebuild, the city’s final, as yet untouched, low income public housing project – Nelton Court.  Located in the North East neighborhood, Nelton Court is in one of Hartford’s most depressed areas.  But, HHA’s plan for development calls for cutting the number of actual housing units basically in half, from 156 to 80.   HHA claims that 76 units there are currently vacant.   Cutting overall units has been the Housing Authority’s trend.  Hartford is a poorer city today than when most of these projects were built, so the justification for decreasing the number of units is unclear.  Continue Reading

Happy Earth Day! (don’t drink the water!)

water1(MDC) (April 22, 2009) – The State of Connecticut Public Health Department is requesting that Metropolitan District (MDC) consumers in the towns of Bloomfield, Glastonbury, Portland, Windsor, Hartford, East Hartford, West Hartford, South Windsor and parts of East Granby and Windsor Locks, boil their drinking water for one minute until further notice. This notification is a precautionary measure.(more)
