When the governor announces her budget proposal in February 2009, expect to see a big knife ripping right through what’s left of the social safety net. At the very moment that a global recession is increasing unemployment, foreclosures and evictions, plans to address a projected $6 billion budget deficit are likely to include proposals to seriously damage what’s left of human services for mentally ill and drug dependent people, for elderly people, for young people . . . basically, for every human being in Connecticut who is most vulnerable.

Some activists in the Hartford area have begun a discussion of what it will take to turn this situation around. We believe that working people and poor people have the right to survive and the right to put our interests first – ahead of political expediency or the comfort zones of the well-to-do. I hope to report back on this work with some specifics shortly, but felt moved to say that this post illustrates why we can’t let the politicians put the cost of the recession on our backs. A year from now it is likely that the economic situation will be much worse than it is now…let’s not wait until then to fight for the peoples’ right to survive.
