I am basically a "kid" in connecticut, but I have started a blog recently to get some people together to help me help the homeless in the area. I will post this article on my page to see if it helps any. This article gave me the idea for the hot chocolate thing too and I will get in contact with administrators at my school to help get the whole school involved with things like can drives, clothing drives, and other kinds of donations.

thanks a lot!

Peter -

You're definitely not taking away from the discussion. It's all very much connected. Especially in a time like this, the needs of the least privledged people should not be put on hold.

Please do keep us all posted on your work!

I don't want to take away from this important discussion of what is going on right now, and the immediate needs of homeless folks in our area, but I also don't think the discussion can stop there.

When the governor announces her budget proposal in February 2009, expect to see a big knife ripping right through what's left of the social safety net. At the very moment that a global recession is increasing unemployment, foreclosures and evictions, plans to address a projected $6 billion budget deficit are likely to include proposals to seriously damage what's left of human services for mentally ill and drug dependent people, for elderly people, for young people . . . basically, for every human being in Connecticut who is most vulnerable.

Some activists in the Hartford area have begun a discussion of what it will take to turn this situation around. We believe that working people and poor people have the right to survive and the right to put our interests first - ahead of political expediency or the comfort zones of the well-to-do. I hope to report back on this work with some specifics shortly, but felt moved to say that this post illustrates why we can't let the politicians put the cost of the recession on our backs. A year from now it is likely that the economic situation will be much worse than it is now...let's not wait until then to fight for the peoples' right to survive.
